Siwak

The siwak, also known as the souek or araq stick, is an oral hygiene instrument with numerous benefits. This small natural branch of the Salvadora Persica shrub, about ten centimetres long, was also recommended by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It wasn't until several centuries after the Prophet Muhammad's death that scientists were able to prove its benefits.

From the origins of siwak to proof of its effectiveness

Muslims use siwak on a daily basis, as recommended by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. But in reality, its use dates back to ancient times, particularly in India and the Middle East.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) greatly contributed to its notoriety, extolling not only its religious merits, but also its numerous health benefits. Its use is an integral part of the Sunnah.

One might think that its virtues are restricted to the spiritual realm. But its therapeutic benefits go far beyond oral hygiene. You may not know it, but siwak is said to have a positive impact on memorization. So use the stick of Araq when you open your moushaf to memorize the word of Allah!

Modern scientific studies have confirmed what the Sunnah taught us over fourteen centuries ago. Since 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized its benefits and even recommended its use. Studies have even shown that siwak can be more effective than a conventional toothbrush for oral hygiene.

Siwak: simple and economical

This miracle stick has extraordinary natural properties. It effectively fights plaque and whitens teeth, and its natural alkaloids give it antimicrobial properties. It also fights bad breath and prevents cavities and gum disease. More surprisingly, it can even have beneficial effects on digestion.

Using siwak is surprisingly simple. Simply peel off about a centimetre and a half of the bark from one end, then chew the wood to form small fibres that serve as a natural brush. Its compact size makes it easy to reach all the nooks and crannies of the mouth, often more difficult to reach with a conventional toothbrush.

The Sunnah refers to specific times for its use: on waking, before ablutions, on returning home, before prayer and before reading the Koran. These recommendations, although not obligatory, underline the importance attached to oral hygiene in Islamic tradition.

We live in an age of growing environmental awareness. Siwak is part of this trend, representing a major ecological alternative. Completely natural and biodegradable, it offers a sustainable solution for oral hygiene. Its low cost makes it affordable for everyone, proving that it's perfectly possible to look after your health without breaking the bank.

Adapting to contemporary lifestyles

For those who prefer to keep their traditional toothbrush while benefiting from the virtues of siwak, miswak toothpastes are now available. This invention makes it possible to combine tradition with contemporary comfort, while enjoying the recognized benefits of this ancestral plant.
